Take Comfort in The Power of Prayer

A Church for You in Lawrence

From Humble

BEGINNINGS

As the Great Dam on the Merrimack River was being built in 1845, the Eastern Diocese of the Massachusetts Episcopal Church was divided into three districts: east, west and south. The Missionary Association of the Eastern District (Essex and Middlesex Counties) believed they should establish a church in the area to serve the men working on the dam and the mills. Our story begins there.

Our Historic Church

Grace Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church building in Lawrence, Massachusetts, located on Common and Jackson Streets. Since 1846, at the time of Lawrence's inception, the property has been utilized for religious institutions. This basic Gothic Revival stone edifice, which replaced an older wooden church, was erected in 1852 and extended in 1892. The church is particularly significant for its ties to the Lawrence family: William Lawrence, grandson of the church's founder, became its preacher in 1876.

In 1976, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
